Feeding Your Cat While You’re Away

I recently went out of town for a weekend and had a heck of a time trying to find someone to watch my 2 cats. My parents were busy, my friends were busy, and I really didn’t want to spend $75 to $100 to kennel my cats when I know that they can take care of themselves.

A friend I know had recommended looking into getting a feeder and water dispenser for my cats. I had briefly looked a while back but didn’t end up following through. But this time, I logged onto the great place they call the world wide web and had a look around. I ended up finding some reviews, and really liked what people were saying about this particular feeder:

I had seen this one before because of the extra large hopper it had, which was definitely necessary for the amount of food my cats could consume over a weekend of being away.

I had actually gone back to a website I had mentioned earlier in my blog to find reviews and they did recommend that Super Feeder as a top choice. There’s a few automatic timed cat feeders that they reviewed, but this one seemed to be the most ideal for my situation.

My Impression of the Super Feeder Upon Receiving

I ended up placing the order and getting it shipped to me 2 days later. Although there were a good amount of parts in the box, it was actually relatively simple to set up and put together. The Digital timer makes it pretty straight forward for programming a few meals a day to drop kibble down the chute.  I realized I should have bought the larger hopper that they have though since after receiving it, it just didn’t seem as large as I had hoped.

My recommendation is that if you have multiple cats and you’ll be away for more than 2 days, to go with the XL version.

The weekend went well while I was gone. Everything operated as needed without any issues and my two little ones were satisfied.

If you’re looking for a feeder to keep your felines happy, I’d definitely recommend the Super Feeder CSF-3. Will keep you all posted as I continue to use it to see what happens with wear and tear over time 🙂

Why are Humans Obsessed with Animals?

110Animals are very special creatures, especially those that we tend to see as pets or which are close to us from a genetic standpoint. In many ways, it is almost impossible to explain this fascination. As humans, we should perceive animals as potential resources that can be either feared or eaten and used in some other manner. But, since the dawn of time, our kind has also been fascinated by the creatures we share our world with. It is enough to look at cave drawings that reach back hundreds of thousands of years and see a huge range of animals, both those that the cavemen hunted and those which simply interested them for some other reasons.

This pattern repeated itself through history and covered the entire planet. It does not matter if people lived on mountains, on islands or frozen planes: every culture is tightly connected to its animals. That is why animals decorate so many coats of arms, flags, emblems and seals of different countries. Today, the situation has not changed in any way and humans continue to be almost obsessed with animals. Anyone who owns and loves their pet like a dog or a cat can understand this idea. For some, at the other hand, this might seem strange and almost unexplainable. However, there are several essential reasons why humanity, in general, is so smitten by animals of all kinds.

The Power of Empathy

Humans are rational beings which think and act in a logical manner. But, at the same time, we are also emotional beings that use feelings instead of cold logic to interact with the world. This is a thing we share with many animal species, especially mammals in general. With them, we are able to connect using emotions, even though we cannot actually talk to one another. However, every dog or cat owner knows perfectly well that their pet will notice when they are sad or happy, which will also impact their emotions. That is the reason why pets like these will curl up to their owners if they see them cry, for example. The reason for this is called empathy and it represents the ability to notice other creature’s emotions. Because of this strong shared trait, people always found it easy to connect with animals on this purely emotional level.

Animals are Always Changing

One of the reasons why animals kept us interested during all of this time is their constant state of change. Like us, they are young, reach maturity and then old age, which makes them change over time. While the basic temperament of an animal usually remains the same, the way it reacts changes over the years. In many ways, this change and the idea that the animals we possess will change just like we do is what makes them so fascinating.

Animals Repay Kindness with Kindness

Pet animals come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing connects them all – they will return the kindness and affection their owners provide them with. This means that a person who loves their dog can get only love in return from their animal. Animals are very grateful beings and there are generous when they give those feelings back and not just notice them using empathy. Because of this, but other reasons as well, animals will always have a place in our hearts.

Dogs or Cats – Your Preference?

The debate rages on…which is smarter, cats or dogs? It’s not that simple to answer, because it’s not really about only one kind of intelligence. Cats and dogs operate from completely different perspectives as they view the world in which they live and play, and sometimes work.

So, to compare a dog with a cat is to not ask the right question. One must consider each animal within the confines of its particular and specific environment based on breed, background and current situation. It’s difficult enough to compare breeds, but different species?

A cat may have an instinct that drives it to hide under things when sensing danger, while some dogs may become aggressive when sensing exactly the same perceived danger. For example, a cat may dive under a porch or the sofa when a strange person shows up, but a dog may either approach the new person with an invitation to play, or with a growl as a warning.

Dogs are bigger, or may think they are, and may feel comfortable, or driven, to move toward a potential danger. A cat, on the other hand, knows it’s small and vulnerable to larger beings who are physically capable of killing it. So, hiding is the better strategy.

Either approach can be thought of as intelligent, given the circumstances, instincts of the animal, and their obvious knowledge of what they need in order to survive another day.

Now, when you bring training into the picture, dogs are more easily trained by most people, but only because it’s a more familiar thing for people to do. It does not necessarily mean that dogs are smarter. The dog has been domesticated for a few thousand years longer than the cat. Thus, the difference in intelligence may be related more to the human factor than to the animal. Certainly, many cats have demonstrated they can be taught to perform many of the same tricks as dogs. It’s just not seen as commonly because humans who wish to train them must be on a cat’s wave length, not a dog’s.

If one considers the ability of each animal to initiate a purposeful action, such as alerting owners to a threat, like fire, smoke or intrusion, stories abound in the news about cats and dogs who saved an owner’s life. They just do these things in their own ways. A cat may tap his owner’s face with a paw to wake up and get out, and a dog may simply bark. The end result will be the same, but only if the owner can recognize the signal and act appropriately.

If you’re interested in getting a pet then there are many different important elements to consider and lots of different factors in choosing precisely the right little furry friend. While some of us will know from the start the kind of pet we’re looking for and maybe class ourselves as either ‘cat’ people or ‘dog’ people, for others this is a subject open to debate and it’s important to consider the various pros and cons of either decision before you decide. Here we will look at what the differences are, and hopefully help you to decide the right kind of pet for you.

Foods Your Cat Should Avoid

If your pets are anything like mine, they may come off as omnivores. My Akita mix is likely to eat anything that does not eat him first. One of my cats has acquired a taste for tomato bisque and all of my dogs enjoy green pepper, zucchini and lettuce. As for my horse, she would drink all of my beer if she had the chance.

There is not much harm in feeding our cats human foods. However, there are some foods that our animal friends should definitely avoid. In addition to foods, certain plants can be downright deadly for our cats.

1. Vegetables and Fruits to Avoid

In addition to chocolate, there are variety of fruit and vegetables that are potentially harmful to cats. Just a few of the fruits and vegetables that your pet should avoid include onions, avocados, mushrooms, grapes and raisins. There are a number of fruit seeds that can cause toxicity problems for your pet including, but not limited to apple seeds, peach and apricot pits, cherry and avocados pits, and mustard seeds.

Fruit seeds and pits contain various levels of cyanide compounds. Though the amount of cyanide may not be fatal to your pet, the effects can be serious enough to require veterinary care. The best advice is to play it safe and avoid exposing your pets to these foods. Onions and similar foods such as leeks and scallions are not poisonous but can cause digestive problems and anemia in some animals so it is best to avoid them.

2. Chocolate and Pets Do Not Mix

Chocolate has long been considered a human food that cats should avoid, and with good reason. Chocolate contains a chemical known as theobromine. Theobromine is similar in chemical composition to caffeine and is tolerated by humans in small amounts and is used as a therapeutic drug for certain medical conditions. Like many types of stimulate chemicals, theobromine can be harmful to humans to large doses. When it comes to animals, theobromine poses a significant health risk.

Though the danger to cats is widely known, theobromine also poses a risk to cats and horses and other domestic pets. The metabolic process for cats, dogs and horses is significantly slower than it is for humans. An animals inability to quickly metabolize theobromine allows toxic levels of the chemical to buildup. Symptoms can range from diarrhea to muscle spasms and vomiting.

No antidote exists for treating theobromine poisoning and it is important to seek immediate veterinary help for any pet who has ingested chocolate. The vet can administer a variety of treatment options that can help reverse the toxic effects of theobromine. The key is to not wait until your pet starts to exhibit symptoms. Seek professional veterinary services immediately.

Since caffeine is similar to theobromine, avoid exposing your cat to sources of caffeine like coffee, tea, coffee beans and tea leaves.

3. Candy is Sweet but Not for Your Pet

Sugar and candy may seem like a harmless treat for your pet. Problems can arise when the candy contains any type of artificial sweetener such as Xylitol. Some candy may contain cacao-based ingredients which can expose your pet to toxic levels of theobromine. If you choose to indulge your pet with the occasional sweet, make certain of the ingredients and do so only in moderation.

The best rule of thumb when it comes to your cats and food is when in doubt, throw it out. Take a look around the kitchen and make sure that you pet-proof cabinets and pantries. It is much easier to prevent exposure to harmful foods than it is to see your pet suffer.

If you are ever in doubt about your pets health, seek professional veterinary help immediately.

In the meantime, check out this infographic below to see which foods are harmful and which ones are not.
