Animals are very special creatures, especially those that we tend to see as pets or which are close to us from a genetic standpoint. In many ways, it is almost impossible to explain this fascination. As humans, we should perceive animals as potential resources that can be either feared or eaten and used in some other manner. But, since the dawn of time, our kind has also been fascinated by the creatures we share our world with. It is enough to look at cave drawings that reach back hundreds of thousands of years and see a huge range of animals, both those that the cavemen hunted and those which simply interested them for some other reasons.
This pattern repeated itself through history and covered the entire planet. It does not matter if people lived on mountains, on islands or frozen planes: every culture is tightly connected to its animals. That is why animals decorate so many coats of arms, flags, emblems and seals of different countries. Today, the situation has not changed in any way and humans continue to be almost obsessed with animals. Anyone who owns and loves their pet like a dog or a cat can understand this idea. For some, at the other hand, this might seem strange and almost unexplainable. However, there are several essential reasons why humanity, in general, is so smitten by animals of all kinds.
The Power of Empathy
Humans are rational beings which think and act in a logical manner. But, at the same time, we are also emotional beings that use feelings instead of cold logic to interact with the world. This is a thing we share with many animal species, especially mammals in general. With them, we are able to connect using emotions, even though we cannot actually talk to one another. However, every dog or cat owner knows perfectly well that their pet will notice when they are sad or happy, which will also impact their emotions. That is the reason why pets like these will curl up to their owners if they see them cry, for example. The reason for this is called empathy and it represents the ability to notice other creature’s emotions. Because of this strong shared trait, people always found it easy to connect with animals on this purely emotional level.
Animals are Always Changing
One of the reasons why animals kept us interested during all of this time is their constant state of change. Like us, they are young, reach maturity and then old age, which makes them change over time. While the basic temperament of an animal usually remains the same, the way it reacts changes over the years. In many ways, this change and the idea that the animals we possess will change just like we do is what makes them so fascinating.
Animals Repay Kindness with Kindness
Pet animals come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing connects them all – they will return the kindness and affection their owners provide them with. This means that a person who loves their dog can get only love in return from their animal. Animals are very grateful beings and there are generous when they give those feelings back and not just notice them using empathy. Because of this, but other reasons as well, animals will always have a place in our hearts.
